Pediatric Dental Emergencies

If your child bites their lip or tongue, gently clean the area with water and apply light pressure with a clean cloth or gauze to stop any bleeding. A cold compress can help reduce swelling. If bleeding doesn’t stop or the injury looks severe, contact our office.

Try gently removing the object with dental floss. Avoid using sharp tools, as they can damage your child’s gums or teeth. If you’re unable to remove it, give us a call, and we’ll help safely resolve the issue.

Rinse your child’s mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. If possible, save any broken pieces and bring them with you to the appointment. Contact us as soon as possible so we can assess and treat the tooth.

If a permanent tooth is knocked out, try to place it back in the socket without touching the root. If that’s not possible, keep it in milk or a tooth preservation solution and contact us immediately. For baby teeth, do not try to reinsert the tooth—call us for guidance.

If a permanent tooth becomes loose due to injury, avoid touching or wiggling it and contact our office right away. For baby teeth, some looseness is normal, but if it’s due to trauma or causing pain, we’re here to help.

Rinse your child’s mouth with warm water and gently floss around the tooth to remove any trapped debris. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums. If the pain persists, contact us so we can identify and treat the cause.

If you suspect a broken jaw, seek immediate medical attention or go to the nearest emergency room. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and keep your child as still and comfortable as possible.

Help protect your child’s smile by encouraging the use of mouth guards during sports and avoiding hard foods or objects that can damage teeth. Regular dental visits also play an important role in keeping your child’s teeth strong and healthy.
